Beware the Ways of Sin
by Rev. Kelvin Broadus

I apologize that it has been so long since the last sermon was posted. I haven't had the access to computer supporting this software in a long time. Hopefully and faithfully it will not hinder me again. The reason that I speak of the ways of sin is because sin has now become a thing of glory for society. Throughout music, TV, video, and the Internet, there is mostly sex, violence, and drug abuse being praised and advertised. No longer do TV shows teach the spiritual value of virginity until marriage, if it ever did. Now it is taught, it's okay if there is protection used. Rappers and other musicians constantly brag of how much sex they have. I choose rap to speak of because I am/was a rapper myself, and most of the competition always rapped about things disrespectful to God. The other forms of music do the same thing. They sing all about how wonderful and magical, or freaky it is, but it is still wrong if it is not with your spouse. TV and video use sex in just about all advertisements and the Internet, well that's all I have to say about that.
Then there's violence and drug abuse. Getting high, drunk, and crunk is also praised in all of the media. There is nothing wrong with fun, but some things are just wrong. There is a thick line between drinking wine for communion or easing the stomach, and drinking liquor and beer. Regardless of how much the user explains, using any drug, including alcohol, is to escape something (even to escape the pressure of your own curiosity) it is a shame that so many great people have disrespected themselves because they let alcohol and other substances cloud their judgments. Violence is such a big issue that I won't get too into it. But, what happened to "turn thy cheek," which, if you read it in St. Matthew, chapter 5, cancels out and explains the "eye for an eye" theory. People love to try and manipulate "eye for an eye" to do wrong, but it is explained. The bottom line is that violence, physical or mental, is a very deep issue that we should learn to control (by controlling anger). People should stop trying to prove themselves and trust God to fight the battles for them. But most are so AFRAID that someone will call them a punk/coward that instead of turning the cheek and walking away, the react in violence. If most folks minded their own business, then a lot less violence would occur also. (Ex. the military :-/)
Basically though, we are in a world today where the disobeying and disrespect of God is accepted and praised, mostly by people who say they believe in God and Christians. I'm not trying to come down on Christians because once you become saved you are attacked greatly by the enemy, and as humans of flesh, you do fall sometimes. But there is also a line between being knocked down, but striving for righteousness, and glorifying, bragging about, accepting as okay, what you know is wrong. The Christian is not expected to be perfect, for that is impossible of man, but is to eternally strive for the perfection of Christ, love God, and obey God with all heart, soul, and mind. You can read the ways of the sinful, specifically in Gal 5. Of course though, there is something to learn throughout the whole Bible. Some specific ways of the sinful listed there include: RAGE, DRUNKEDNESS, FORNICATION, WILD PARTIES (the term in the NIV is orgies, which applies to all group gatherings of uncontrolled immorality), and DISRESPECTFULNESS. I pray for the deliverance of all from the acceptance, temptation, or craving of sin in any way, fashion, or form, and the wisdom to recognize it (even when the world is telling us that it is okay in these last days) in Jesus Christ's holy name, Amen.

Back to Your Blessing
